WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Green Party of the United States called for publication of the draft text of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), after leaked portions indicated that the trade agreement will weaken democratically enacted laws protecting the environment, public health, and labor rights in signatory nations, including the U.S.

Representatives from the 12 nations are meeting in Washington, D.C., this week for the next round of talks on the TPP, which if enacted will affect more than 40% of the world's GDP.

Greens expressed support for activists and protesters, in the U.S. and other countries, who are speaking out against the secretly negotiated pact, which has stalled in the U.S. after Congress rejected President Obama's request for Fast Track approval. Greens also support Wikileaks' publication of the secret drafts.

"We oppose trade agreements that impose rules and international bureaucracies that privilege corporate interests, undermine environmental regulations, send jobs across the border, and violate basic principles of democracy and transparency. The only thing President Obama seems to have learned from the effects of NAFTA and other pacts and from the anti-globalization demonstration 15 years ago is to negotiate trade deals in secret," said David Doonan, Green mayor of the Village of Greenwich, New York.

According to Wikileaks, in a Oct. 16 press release, "Few people, even within the negotiating countries' governments, have access to the full text of the draft agreement and the public, who it will affect most, none at all. Large corporations, however, are able to see portions of the text, generating a powerful lobby to effect changes on behalf of these groups and bringing developing country members reduced force, while the public at large gets no say." Wikileaks has already published sections of the TPP covering digital and intellectual property rights, genetic modification, and access to medicine.

For similar reasons, the Green Party has also declared its opposition to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership as currently negotiated between the U.S. and European Union. The 12 TPP member states are the U.S., Japan, Mexico, Canada, Australia, Malaysia, Chile, Singapore, Peru, Vietnam, New Zealand, and Brunei.
